Anorexia nervosa is a disorder that is more prevalent in the western countries
and mainly affects professionals like models, dancers, actors etc. Media also
has an important role to play as they have projected "thinness" as
the first and foremost criteria for being in fashion. There is a general hype
about thinness especially in the fashion industry making people feel the need
to diet and lose weight. Film or fashion personalities who are constantly under
media glare face pressure to look thin and desirable at all times and thus are
more at risk to develop this eating disorder.
Teenagers or youngsters who are teased by their friends or colleagues about
their weight and appearance may feel the pressure to lose weight. Victims of
such nasty comments and jokes may undergo strict dieting to become more socially
acceptable.
Family conflicts can be a major cause as a child might forgo food to draw attention
and try to bring the family back together. Deaths in the immediate family cause
stress and can act as a potential trigger for anorexia.
