There are various symptoms associated with anorexia nervosa, however some patients may try to hide their condition from others making detection difficult. Typical warning signs to look out for in a patient include:

  • Extreme weight loss
  • Abnormal fear of gaining weight.
  • Excessive exercise.
  • Undergoes frequent weight checks.
  • Unexplained skipping of meals.
  • Wears baggy clothes to hide thin figure.
  • Avoids social gatherings where meals are going to be served.
  • Amenorrhoea (missing of three consecutive menstrual cycles) in females.
  • Obsession with food and calories.
  • Abuses laxatives and diet pills.
  • Self induced vomiting.
  • Fatigue.
  • Irregular or reduced heart beat.
